Once I uninstalled the projector utility, he was golden. I do like the flexibility of the usb adaptor, but it is the most unstable out of the mix. Until I added usb/display link into the mix I never had the problems I do now. Oh and I'm am using both dvi and vga on one of the monitors that isn't connected to the KVM when I want to connect a monitor to another pc or laptop when I've run out of spots on the KVM. I'm running a laptop docked, 3 monitors with vga, dvi and usb adaptors plus a kvm connected to one of the monitors. If it is really necessary to turn off a monitor, it really would be worth it as suggested earlier to get a different videocard that will support all 3 monitors.

The reason shutting off 1 monitor makes everything go nuts is that Windows and the other drivers are all trying to determine how to configure the 2 remaining monitors, even machines with just the windows display settings to worry about sometimes it guesses wrong. With 3 different types of video with overlapping settings, there may be some of the weirdness that you won't be able to get around. Even if the settings you are looking at are correct, change them and then change them back, turn off and on the monitor and see what happens. Change the settings in 1 and test, then move on to the next if needed. Even if they all have the same settings, one is taking precedence over the others.

Most likely it is a conflict between the windows display settings, Display link settings and the ATI driver utility. I would love to hear if anyone out there has suggestions. I don't understand how shutting off the power to just one monitor can hose the entire setup. Once we get here, things can be reconfigured with no issues. When it starts again, you get two active monitors only, but one of them is the primary with the other being the DisplayLink supported monitor. The only thing we can do when we lose the primary monitor is hold down the power button and shutdown the machine.

I even tried using RDP from another compter to connect to his machine to see if that would activate the primary monitor but no dice. I did try switching the connections to monitors 1 and 3 when this happens but got the same result (one monitor from the ATI card remains active and the Displaylink remains active). Monitor 2 is the only one with HDMI capabilities, so I have been leaving it alone. We try to get to display properties, but that window opens up on the primary monitor (which is completely black at this point). Monitors 1 and 2 remain powered on, but neither is the primary monitor with the Windows taskbar. When the user powers off one or more of the monitors and then turns them on again, we lose monitor 3. The user has three monitors (we will call them monitor 1, monitor 2, and monitor 3 from left to right) - monitor 1 is connected via DVI and a USB DisplayLink Adapter, monitor 2 is HDMI to the ATI card, and monitor 3 is VGA to the ATI card. This video card has one VGA, one DVI, and one HDMI port.
